Landlords put a stop to HMO electricity theft.

Restricting access to a sub meter removes the opportunity for unscrupulous tenants to add wiring that by-passes the meter allowing them to use power without paying for it. The majority of tenants do the right thing and pay for the power they use. Unfortunately there are exceptions to this rule. To assist landlords Metro Prepaid has launched the MET004 a wired communication split meter, that allows the meter to be secured in an access controlled environment.

Estimates suggest the UK loses hundreds of millions in electricity theft each year.
Mark runs an HMO and is dealing with a tenant who deliberately by passed a sub meter to steal £620 worth of electricity.
This money could have been spent upgrading the property or passed back to tenants by reducing rents.
The loss could also have been easily avoided by fitting a wired split meter for as little as £60

Experienced landlords know to include revenue protection measures like payments monitoring, paired with meter installation inspections where there is a shortfall in the money they collect, when compared to the money they must pay, to the energy supplier.

What is the easiest way to instal a prepaid meter in an HMO?

Note that each room in an HMO should be fitted with its own mini Consumer Unit (CU) - the supply to the CU should be controlled by a dedicated circuit breaker on the Main Distribution Board (CU)

HMO Daddy suggests that you use an existing plug socket in each room to run the wiring from the new Consumer Unit in the room back to the breaker on the main board - this obviates the need for new reticulation between the main board and the rooms.
