MID approved electricity meters — what UK buyers need to know

If you're billing a tenant, recharging a sub-meter, or selling electricity at an EV charge point or marina berth, UK law requires a MID approved meter. The Measuring Instruments Directive (now retained in UK law as the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016) sets minimum accuracy standards for any meter used in trade — meaning anywhere a reading translates into money charged.

Most of our meters carry MID Class B accuracy (1% tolerance), which exceeds the legal minimum for billing applications. Typical use cases include:

  • Sub-metering tenants in HMOs, flats and student accommodation
  • Caravan park and marina hook-ups
  • EV charging point billing
  • FOffice sub-tenant recharges
  • Shopping centre and retail unit billing
  • Solar PV export measurement (bi-directional MID models)

All certificates of MID approval are available on request.

Beyond meters: energy monitoring and remote reading systems

For multi-site portfolios, large commercial buildings and managing agents, manual meter reading is no longer practical. Owen Brothers supplies a full wireless remote monitoring stack:

  • OBM-LoRa wireless units — long-range LoRaWAN modules that retrofit to any pulsed-output meter and stream readings to the cloud.
  • ReadMyMeter online portal — view consumption, generate bills, set alerts and export data across every meter in your portfolio.
  • OB4373 & OB4374 monitoring kits — three-phase multi-circuit meters with Rogowski coils and 12 months of remote monitoring access included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a MID approved meter to bill my tenants in the UK?

Yes. Under the UK Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016, any electricity meter whose reading is used to charge money to a third party must be MID approved. This applies to landlords sub-metering tenants, caravan park hook-ups, marina berths, EV charge points and any commercial recharge arrangement.

What's the difference between a direct-connected and a CT-operated meter?

Direct-connected meters wire the load current straight through the meter and are used for supplies up to 100A. For larger loads, a CT-operated meter is paired with a current transformer that scales the current down to a 5A or 1A signal the meter can read. Above 200A, CT operation is the norm.

Are Owen Brothers electrical meters MID approved?

Yes — every billing-grade meter in our OB-series range, including the OB112, OB113-MOD, OB115-MOD, OB415-MOD and OB418, is MID Class B approved. Certificates are supplied on request.

Can you supply meters with Modbus or pulse outputs for building management systems?

Yes. The OB415-MOD, OB418 and OB115-MOD all include RS485 Modbus RTU as standard, plus pulsed outputs for legacy BMS integration. Our three phase range supports the same protocols.

Do you ship outside the UK?

Yes. We ship to over 50 countries via express international courier. Contact sales@owen-brothers.com for an international quote.

What's the lead time on bulk orders?

Stock items dispatch the same working day if ordered before our daily cut-off. For volume orders (typically 50+ units) we'll confirm exact lead times at quote stage — usually within 5 working days.
