CT Operated Metering Panels
Owen Brothers Metering can supply DIN-rail and panel-mounted meters from across our range in high-quality, sealable metering panels.
Our CT Operated Metering Panels provide a convenient, safe and professional solution for the installation of CT-operated metering equipment. Panels can be supplied pre-wired and ready for installation, helping to reduce installation time on site while providing a neat, secure and reliable metering arrangement.
Our IP-rated metering panels include as standard:
Optional equipment can also be incorporated, including Test Terminal Blocks (TTBs) and CT shorting terminals, allowing meters and associated equipment to be safely tested, isolated or replaced without leaving the CT secondary circuit open.
CT Operated Metering
Current Transformers (CTs) are widely used where the current being measured is too high to pass directly through the electricity meter. The CT reduces the measured current to a standard secondary value, typically 5A, which can then be measured by a compatible CT-operated meter.
CTs are specified by their primary-to-secondary current ratio, for example 100/5A, 200/5A etc, allowing the metering system to be selected to suit the electrical installation.
Owen Brothers Metering can supply complete CT metering solutions, including the meter, current transformers, enclosure, fuses, terminals and associated wiring, providing a complete ready-to-install metering package.
Important CT Safety Information
The secondary circuit of a Current Transformer must never be left open-circuit while current is flowing through the primary conductor.
If the CT secondary is disconnected while energised, a potentially dangerous high voltage can be generated across the secondary terminals. This can present a risk to damage connected equipment and permanently affect the accuracy of the Current Transformer.
The CT secondary should therefore always remain connected to an appropriate burden or be securely short-circuited before metering equipment is disconnected.
Test Terminal Blocks (TTBs)
For additional safety and convenience, our metering panels can be supplied with a Test Terminal Block (TTB).
A TTB provides a safe method of testing, isolating or replacing metering equipment while maintaining the correct CT secondary circuit. The CTs can be securely short-circuited before the meter is disconnected, helping to protect both personnel and equipment.
This arrangement is particularly useful for installations where meters may require periodic testing, maintenance or replacement.
